About Us
Meet Thomas, Owner/Lead Captioner
The “us” in Caption Nerds is mostly Owner/Lead Captioner Thomas Herman (he/him/his). A CART Captioner, Thomas is a stenographer with a specialty in near-instant real-time translation for the Deaf/HOH community as well as others who need or enjoy captions.
A graduate from the American Captioning Institute, Thomas has been providing CART captions since 2016. Thomas is a member of the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) and has written for the Journal of Court Reporting, the NCRA’s magazine, and often contributes to social media initiatives to raise awareness of the industry as a whole, but more specifically highlights quality captions for the deaf and hard of hearing community, DEI and LGBTQIA+ representation.
Thomas is also a published author of some obscure fiction and has written and consulted for InnoCaption. He has also consulted for various ASL firms he’s worked with, assisting them in growing their CART clientele; and volunteers for stenographer associations as his bandwidth permits.
Admin Support Specialist/Social Media Photographer
Christopher Peny (he/him/his) is our Admin Support & Social Media Specialist. He has bachelor’s in hospitality and years of experience in administration and customer service including roles at The Plaza Hotel, NYC, American Express, and AAA Travel.
In addition to customer support and administration responsibilities, he also uses his interest in photography to support our social media accounts as well.

While Thomas is the Lead Captioner, he does have a wonderful, trusted network of freelance colleagues that are available for larger jobs, overflow work, et cetera.
